Lee Evans, Conservative candidate for Ellesmere Port & Bromborough, has written about the importance of education and his plan to ensure everyone in Ellesmere Port & Bromborough can access the skills they need to get on in life.
Lee was born on the Wirral and moved to Ellesmere Port when he was five, attending the former Mansfield Primary School on Appleton Drive, the Whitby High School in Ellesmere Port and Wirral Grammar School for Boys in Bebington. He became the first in his family to go to university and today works in education.
Lee said:
Education was the leg up in life that I needed - and that’s what I want it to be for other people, too.
That's why, if I'm elected as your MP, I will fight for more opportunities for people to gain the skills they need to succeed.
That means high standards in local schools, including a ban on mobile phones, to ensure that time in school is spent learning the knowledge and skills young people need.
It also means delivering more apprenticeships, because whilst for some people university is the best next step, an apprenticeship can be a great way to earn, learn and develop skills for a brilliant career. I'll back the Conservative plan to deliver 100,000 more apprenticeships by the end of the next parliament.
Sometimes, we think that education stops at 18 or 21. But if we want to see better jobs and a more prosperous area, we need to create more opportunities for people to learn and gain skills throughout their life.
So I'll also be working across party politics to promote lifelong learning, including a bigger role for Further Education colleges, so that no matter your stage of life you can gain new skills.
Speaking about the Conservative record on education, Lee added:
I'm very proud of the Conservative achievements in education since 2010.
The number of schools rated good or outstanding in England has risen from 68 percent under the last Labour government to 90 per cent today. We're also climbing up the international league tables for education, and children in England are rated the best readers in the western world.
This is a record to be proud of, because hundreds of thousands of children are now getting a better education and gaining the skills to succeed in life.
