We are pleased to be able to share some brilliant news: John Dwyer has been successfully elected as our next Police & Crime Commissioner. After second preferences, the Cheshire-wide results were:
John Dwyer (Conservative): 111,962 (majority 12,499) (53%)
David Keane (Labour): 99,463 (47%)
As you can see, it was a great victory and a true testament to John's campaign and the efforts of Conservative activists across the county, including right here in Ellesmere Port & Neston. I've written to John to congratulate him on behalf of our Association and wish him well as he works on behalf of everyone in Cheshire to make our county an even safer place to live.
I'm also pleased to share news from the Neston by-election. Our candidate, Steve Wastell, fought a passionate campaign in this traditionally Labour ward and, whilst we were unable to win the seat, his efforts were rewarded with a swing of 2.5% in our favour and a record number of votes in the ward on the current boundaries.
The results in Neston were:
Keith Miller (Labour): 875 (57%) (majority 296)
Steve Wastell (Conservative) 579 (38%)
John Edwards (Liberal Democrat): 80 (5%)
On behalf of the Association, we want to thank Steve for all he did as our candidate. He was a great flagbearer for our Party and made a strong case to the people of Neston.
Speaking personally, I'm enormously proud of all our Association has achieved in recent months in contributing to these results. The past few years haven't always provided the results we wanted locally as we lost the Council (2015) and the Police & Crime Commissioner (2016), as well as seeing Labour advance across Cheshire West & Chester and Cheshire East in 2019. But we have never accepted defeat as inevitable but always continued to work for victory.
That's why, in the past few months, we've delivered tens of thousands of leaflets in our constituency, surveyed hundreds of voters for their opinions, promoted dozens of messages to thousands of people on social media, conducted street stalls and much more. All of which we have done because we believe in the Conservative cause in our area; all of which was only possible because of your continued support.
So thank you to you, our members and supporters, for the contributions you make to our Association and its campaigns. Whether you were a donor, a deliverer, made phone calls or contributed in any other way, these successes are your successes and, I believe, signal our continued progress in Ellesmere Port & Neston and beyond.
